Strut Your Mutt

Strut Your Mutt

This year’s Strut Your Mutt, on September 7th marks the 20th anniversary of this scenic stroll along the Kennebunk beaches with your favorite canine(s) and a few hundred other like-minded animal lovers. It is also the Animal Welfare Society's largest single fundraising event of the year. The pledge money benefits the Sadie Fund. Festivities and Registration begin at 9am and the walk begins at 11am. Online registration coming soon!

What is the the Sadie Fund?  Named after a special dog who warmed the hearts of shelter staff, the Sadie Fund helps pay for the expensive medical care that some of the AWS homeless animals need.

Surrendered by her owner who could not afford to properly care for her health problems, Sadie arrived at AWS with a severe skin allergy, Lyme disease, and kidney failure. In spite of her many medical issues, it was obvious to staff that this little 8-year-old Shih Tzu had a huge heart, tons of charisma, and a keen zest for life. She quickly charmed the entire AWS staff. After a long, happy life in her adoptive home she passed away at the age of 16 in 2008.

The Animal Welfare Society spends approximately $150,000 annually on medical care for aged, injured, and sick homeless animals. With thousands of animals arriving at AWS each year, difficult decisions must be made based on the long-term quality of life and costs of medical care which may include daily medications, Lyme disease and heartworm treatments, spay/neuter surgery, or even life-saving procedures like joint replacement or amputation.

A donation to the Sadie Fund will directly help to pay for medical care to save more special homeless animals like Sadie.

Transit Day

Transit Day

Our Open House

As a museum of mass transit, we collect all types of vehicles. We have streetcars, interurbans, rapid transit cars, buses, trackless trolleys, work equipment, and freight equipment. On Transit Weekend, we bring out our rapid transit cars, buses, and trackless trolleys, which are not usually operating on a normal day.

Our bus collection is constantly on the move, with rides around the Museum as well as local bus trips around town. Mixed in throughout the day is the operation of our trackless trolley. This unique mode of transportation is a bus that uses overhead wires (like a streetcar) to power electric motors and they remain in use in only few cities across the United States. Being electric, it will seem odd sitting in a bus and hearing virtually no noise as you move down the road.

Also during the day’s activities, our rapid transit cars make frequent trips on our demonstration railway. This is in addition to the streetcar service provided normally. You will have the chance to ride on a subway train from New York City (two different vintages) or an elevated train from Boston.

Saturday lunch service provided by Ned's Bakes & BBQs.
